PHOENIX — Legends Football League, a professional sport that features women playing football in skimpy outfits, said Thursday it planned to expand to Arizona and other markets.
In a press release, the league said it was in active talks with potential ownership groups in Phoenix or Scottsdale. The team may be called the Scorch.
“From our [Los Angeles] league office, in some instances we are thousands of miles away from our teams, thus we can only lend so much support,” the league’s managing partner, Mitchell Mortaza, said in the release.
The sport’s championship, called the Legends Cup, was held in Scottsdale in 2016.
Mortaza said the league should have teams in 33 U.S. markets within the next 10 years. It has already been launched in Canada, Australia and Europe.
Eight cities currently have a team.
The sport was originally called the Lingerie Football League when it was founded in 2009 but the name was changed three years ago.
It is similar to arena football, in that it is played indoors on a shortened field. The women play with seven players on each side, while the men play with eight.
The women’s sport is also full-contact, but they do not wear jerseys and pants. Instead, they wear uniforms that are similar to bikinis and fewer pads.
