PHOENIX — Uber drivers in the Phoenix area who gave up their New Year’s Eve to drive people around likely earned a tidy sum for working that night.
According to figures released by the ride-share company, drivers earned nearly $40,000 in tips between Sunday night and the wee hours of Monday morning.
That number could increase, as riders can give their driver a tip as long as 30 days after their ride.
The largest single tip given — so far — was $100.
Some of those drivers marked the turn of the year with at least one rider in the car. Uber said 625 riders were in a car when the clock hit midnight.
It also seemed a lot of friends — you know, not the old acquaintances you forgot — used the service to get around. More than 2,500 riders either made multiple stops or split fares with someone.
While most riders likely used Uber to get to a party and then get home, one rider must be quite popular: He or she took seven separate rides.
Considering the company’s figures only measured the span between 5 p.m. Sunday and 5 a.m. Monday, that person clearly had a very full social calendar.
