PHOENIX — Arizona’s population base grew to 7 million for the first time in the state’s history, according to a recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The report, which ranked state populations, said Arizona was tied with Florida as the fifth-fastest growing states in the nation, after its population increased a total of 1.6 percent.

That percentage amounted to 107,628 additional Arizona residents and a population total of 7,016,270 people, the report said.

The report, which was comprised of estimates, are not part of the regular census which takes place every 10 years. The next official census was scheduled for 2020.

Arizona beat out Texas, Colorado and Washington, D.C. to tie with Florida for the fifth spot.

An influx of people who moved to Arizona this year greatly contributed to the Grand Canyon state’s overall ranking.

About 79,000 people moved into the state in 2017. More than 16,000 from that total were from other countries.

Health was apparently another factor in the population boost. The state had more births than deaths this year.

Nevada, which had a 2 percent increase and Utah, with an increase of 1.9 percent, beat out Arizona for second and third place.

The state of Idaho grew the fastest, adding 2.2 percent to its population base.
