PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation can now re-open freeways faster thanks to a innovation developed from its own employees.

According to a press release, ADOT maintenance workers discovered a new method to be able to help seal roads more efficiently.

Using strap metal, workers have been able to make a new template that doesn’t affect the seal used to preserve asphalt on newly repaired roads.

“…We wanted to make sure we can get (a freeway) open as soon as possible, so we have to be as efficient as possible,” said Mark Kilian, a highway operations technical supervisor with ADOT.

The template keeps seal off of the HOV markers within lanes.

Before, the markers within the lanes had to be repainted before a certain freeway could re-open to the public.

ADOT expects to save about $310 for each marker that doesn’t have to be repainted.
