PHOENIX — Texting, tweeting, and talking on the phone — we are probably all guilty of practicing these habits, all while we drive.

Driving in America is becoming more dangerous every day, but for now, Arizona has relatively safe driving conditions.

According to a new study, Arizona has the 11th-best drivers out of all 50 states.

The study, conducted by Quotewizard.com, ranked drivers on sampled information from more than two million data points and weighted various incident totals for each state as well as how often crashes occur in those areas.

The data included accidents, speeding tickets, DUI arrests, traffic citations and fatalities along each state’s roadways.

Arizona beat out Kentucky, Montana, New York and Alaska to claim the No. 11 spot on the list. Oklahoma, West Virginia and Illinois edged the Grand Canyon state with a better overall score.

Nationally, car-related deaths have risen by 14 percent since 2015 and the average cost per car accident is rising too, the study said.

Distracted driving seems to be the largest culprit in the rise of accident rates. Nearly 3,500 deaths were accounted for in 2015 by distracted drivers. Distracted driving can be attributed to texting, tweeting, talking on the phone, using a GPS and eating.

California ranked as the worst state in the survey. The study showed that California had the worst results for DUIs in the nation.

Surprisingly, Minnesota ranked as the second-worst. The weather was one contributing factor but another factor was their reputation as “nice” drivers. Minnesota drivers saw big increases in accidents due to overly slow, passive-aggressive driving in the northern Midwest state.

Conversely, another website, CarInsuranceComparison.com, said Arizona has the nation’s second-worst drivers.
