PHOENIX — A Valley man was convicted of homicide and child abuse charges Tuesday stemming from a 2015 incident when his 2-year-old son died from being left in a hot vehicle.

Authorities said the man, James Koryor, 43, left his son inside his car for “a couple hours” while he took a nap at the family’s home in April 2015.

“This case involves the senseless death of a young, innocent victim whose life was cut short by the careless and self-centered actions of his father,” said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery in a press release.

The press release said Koryor awoke to screaming pleas from his wife who found the boy unresponsive in the car. The man told authorities he left his two youngest children inside the car after he ran an errand in the afternoon.

When he returned home, he went inside and took a nap. He told authorities he had been drinking earlier that day.

That day, temperatures inside the car were estimated to be between 132 to 137 degrees.

His sentencing is set for Feb. 16.
