PHOENIX – Interstate 17 in Arizona was recently included in a report by Teletrac Navman as one of the most dangerous highways in the U.S.

Based on the analysis of fatality data between 2011 and 2015, the report found that the popular Arizona highway had 123 fatalities over the course of the five year period — the fourth most in the country.

The total amount of deaths resulted in an average of .843 deaths per mile. Of the numerous fatalities, 49 came from within the city of Phoenix.

The report went into extensive detail, saying that the month of March, the third day of every month and Saturdays were the most common times that deaths from accidents occurred.

The I-17 finished behind the I-4 in Florida, I-45 in Texas and U.S. route 192 in Florida. Of the bunch, the I-45 has the most deaths at 290, but the I-4 ranked as the most dangerous due to its average of 1.25 deaths for every mile.

The I-17 is the main 146 mile stretch of highway connecting Phoenix to Flagstaff, and is often referred to as the Black Canyon Freeway. Completed in the 1950s, the highway was the first freeway segment built in Arizona and is one of two interstates that does not go across state lines.
