PHOENIX — U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said President Donald Trump should consider putting down his cellphone and stop bashing members of his own party.
“Stop tweeting. I think I would say stop tweeting,” McCain said when he was asked what advice he would give the president during an interview with the Today Show.
Trump has remained a frequent Twitter user since taking office earlier this year. He has used the platform to both announce new initiatives and lash out at other politicians who oppose him, including McCain.
The senator said he would advise Trump to stop attacking his own party, as there are plenty of people waiting to take their shot.
“I think I would also say, ‘Look, there’s no reason to attack Republicans. We’ve got enough people to attack them,'” he said.
McCain said he would like to see his colleagues focus on developing relationships with people from across the aisle rather than sticking to people within their own party.
“The guy that I fought with and worked with almost more than anybody in the United States Senate was one (late Democratic Sen.) Edward M. Kennedy,” he said.
“He and I would yell at each other, we would fight and we’d walk off and he’d put his arm around me and say, ‘Hey, we did pretty good, didn’t we?’ That’s the kind of relationship you have to have and we did a lot of legislation together.”
