PHOENIX — The rain and hail fell heavily in the Phoenix area Thursday evening, with many areas around the Valley getting nearly two inches.

The Phoenix Zoo was right in the middle of areas hit hardest by the monsoon storm, and now they will have to close for a day.

The zoo announced Thursday night that they will be closed Friday.

“All animals are accounted for and safe,” said Linda Hardwick, communications director for the Phoenix Zoo. “We are in the early assessment phase of the damage, but there are multiple trees down. The tent at our lakeside area has been destroyed, the tenting [and] canopy at Stingray Bay is torn in half, as well as flooding and debris litter are covering several trails of the Zoo among other damage.”

Hardwick said to ensure safety for all guests, staff and animals, they will close the zoo to clean up.
