PHOENIX — Monday is back-to-school day for the Chandler Unified School District, and Chandler Police would like you to slow down.

The department says be prepared for lots of traffic – and not all in cars.

“Parents are going to be running out there with their kids – trying to figure out the routes,” said Sgt. Daniel Mejia. “And you have to remember a lot of the kids ride their bike(s) to school.”

Mejia also said traffic may be especially heavy in the mornings and afternoons. There will also be buses picking up and dropping off children at designated bus stops and children crossing streets.

“Pay attention to the crossing guards,” he said. “We have to keep in mind that kids – especially younger kids – will dart in and out of traffic.”

All of Chandler Unified’s elementary and junior high schools have school zones, as well as pick-up and drop-off locations for parents. The speed limit in school zones is 15 miles per hour, and passing in school zones is prohibited.

The pick-up and drop-off locations at these schools are designed for children’s safety.

Mejia also recommended drive, walk, or ride the route to and from school with your child. Make it a point of emphasis that your child uses the same route every day and knows the street names along the route. Ensure your child is accompanied by a friend or sibling when walking or riding a bike to school.

We want to hear from you.
