Phoenix gets two new routes in big Frontier Airlines expansion

PHOENIX — Two new direct flights out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport were part of a huge expansion announced by Frontier Airlines on Wednesday.

In a press release, the airline said it was adding direct service between Phoenix and two major cities in Texas — Austin and San Antonio. Tickets for the new routes were available on the company’s website.

The two new flights were part of Frontier’s announcement that it would double the number of routes it flies to 85 and add 21 cities to its repertoire.

“Customers will benefit not only from the broad new selection of nonstop routes, but our growing network will provide more than 1,000 new connecting route options,” Barry Biffle, the president and CEO for Frontier Airlines, said in the release.

The airline said the expansion meant it would offer service to about 90 percent of the population of the United States. It also claimed it would save fliers about $1 billion.

“By taking advantage of our natural share of connecting passengers, we can offer our low fares to even more of America,'” Biffle said.

To celebrate the big news, Frontier also announced a sale on Wednesday. Some one-way fares were priced as low as $39, though none from Phoenix were eligible for the deal.

However, some one-way flights from the desert were priced about $45.
