PHOENIX — Authorities said six people, including a Phoenix family with an infant, died in a multivehicle dust storm wreck on Interstate 10 near the Arizona-New Mexico border.

Police said 18 big rigs and seven cars smashed into one another Monday evening in New Mexico during a sudden rush of blowing dust and a thunderstorm.

They were on a stretch of freeway that frequently is closed because of the dangerous conditions created by sudden blowing dust.

The dust storm blew in suddenly on I-10 West near Lordsburg, New Mexico.

Five of the six victims died at the scene. Among those killed was a 9-month-old girl from Phoenix, who was traveling with her parents.

The victims have been identified as Jose Elias Caraveo-Serrano, 30, and Susana Caraveo, 29, of Phoenix, along with their baby; Jose Manuel Clemente, 77, and Maurella Clemente Munoz, 38, of El Paso, Texas; and Josefina Silva, 47, of Escondido, California.

The 60-mile section of highway was reopened Tuesday morning.
