Flake seeks more funding for Veterans Court Outreach specialists

PHOENIX — A specialized court helping veterans get their lives back may soon get a little boost.

Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake will ask for more funding for Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) specialists. These people work with Veterans Treatment Courts nationwide – and in Arizona – to help tailor programs for struggling veterans.

During a visit to a Mesa Veterans Treatment Court Monday, Flake said he was astounded at “how many organizations and individuals are here to help,” he said. “[They] make sure that treatment options – that people stick to them, that there ARE options available.”

In exchange for successful completion of the Veterans Treatment Court, a veteran will have his or her charges either lowered or dropped. Arizona Attorney Gen. Mark Brnovich says this kind of program is the least of what veterans deserve.

“We have an obligation to give back to our veterans to make sure that those who were willing to wear the uniform are taken care of,” Brnovich said.

Flake’s Veterans Treatment Court Improvement Act asks for funding for at least 50 more VJO specialists.
