PHOENIX — A baby born prematurely after the mother was seriously injured in a Phoenix car crash has died, authorities said.

The 30-year-woman delivered the infant by emergency cesarean section after the wreck Sunday afternoon on northbound Interstate 17 near Camelback Road. Her three other children were also in the van.

The woman, whose name has not been released by law enforcement officials, remained in the hospital Monday. Her three older children were reported in stable condition.

The Phoenix Fire Department, which responded to the accident, said the mother had multiple injuries, including broken legs and an arm fracture.

Firefighters had to extract the woman from her van where she was trapped by the driver’s seat.

Bystanders had already pulled the children, ages 5, 6, and 14 from the van when firefighters arrived.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
