PHOENIX — Maricopa County voters will soon be able to get replacement ballots at polling places.

The replacement ballots are for people who lose, damage or forget to mail their ballots and will be printed at the polls, thanks to new technology.

“Folks who need a replacement ballot can go to any one of these voting centers to do the replacement ballots, and they can turn them in anywhere around the Valley,” Fontes said.

Fontes said his office plans to test the replacement ballot system as early as this year’s jurisdictional elections, which are scheduled to take place in the fall.

The change marks the first step of Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes’ plan to possibly move to a mail-in only voting system.

According to the recorder’s office, nearly 7 in 10 of the 2.2 million registered voters in Maricopa County were registered to vote by mail in January 2016.

In the November general election, 8 in 10 people voted by mail.
