PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer jumped in front of an oncoming car to save the life a tow truck driver who was also standing in its path.

The unidentified officer’s injuries weren’t life-threatening, police said.

The department said the officer was standing near the truck Saturday night at Third Street and Greenway Road as a disabled vehicle was being hoisted on to truck’s flat bed.

While the car was loading, another car sailed over a raised median and landed in traffic going the other way.

The officer, a nine-year veteran of the force, shoved the tow truck driver to safety and also managed to get out of the car’s path.

The driver of the car was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police said the officer has been training to move up to become a sergeant.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
