PHOENIX — The South Mountain Park trails will be undergoing renovations after the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department approved the plans this week.

The $23 million plan should take several years to complete.

According to the official plan report, highlights of the South Mountain Park and Preserve Trail Master Plan include improving 53 miles of existing trails, adding 38 miles of hiker-created trails, restoring unsustainable trails, making a new trail naming and marking system and more.

Among the renovations, according to Ahwatukee Foothills News, many trails that abruptly end in Phoenix neighborhoods will be sealed off and restored as natural desert.

The trail master plan has been in the works since 2016 and was approved at the parks board on March 23.

Community added input to the plan.

The last time the park adopted a plan for renovations and other improvements was in 1989.

The park and preserve covers 16,000 acres and consists of three mountain ranges: the Ma Ha Tauk, Gila and Guadalupe.

South Mountain Park and Preserve will celebrate the centennial of its adoption into the City of Phoenix parks system in 2024.

We want to hear from you.
