LISTEN: Jeff Flake, Arizona Senator

PHOENIX — Hours after cracking up a Senate Judiciary Committee by asking a Supreme Court nominee if he would rather fight 100 duck-sized horses or one horse-sized duck, Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake answered the question himself.

“One big duck, of course. No question … little horses kind of freak me out,” Flake told KTAR’s Arizona’s Morning News on Wednesday.

Flake quizzed nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch on Tuesday during the hearing on Capitol Hill.

“After 10 hours of hearings, I think all of us needed to inject a little levity to it,” Flake said of asking a question one of his children had passed on.

The day was a long one for the panel and Gorsuch.

“I had 30 minutes to ask questions,” Flake said.

The confirmation hearings continue with another five or six hours on Wednesday, during which committee member — there are 20 — has 20 minutes to ask more questions.

The panel will meet again. The members could vote on Gorsuch’s nomination, but Flake said Democrats on the panel likely would hold over the vote for another week and “likely will exercise that prerogative” pushing the panel vote to April 3.

It would be on the floor a week later.

Flake has been in Gorsuch’s corner since the January nomination.

“He’s very, very good.”

We want to hear from you.
