PHOENIX — A road in a Phoenix suburb collapsed Thursday morning under the weight of water flowing from the Salt River.

A section of Gilbert Road at the Salt River in Mesa was underwater and in two pieces.

The northbound lanes were scheduled to be closed for weeks.

Water has been rushing into the river from a scheduled runoff release by the Salt River Project.

Debris from the utility company’s release has also wound up in Tempe Town Lake. City officials closed the lake to water activity on Wednesday, but the grounds remained open.
