Sgt. Jason Weeks with Buckeye police said at a press conference that the unidentified infant passed away from its injuries at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

“This is now a homicide investigation,” Weeks said.

The boy’s mother was identified as 29-year-old Andrea Portillo.

Weeks said she is in custody and will be booked on numerous charges, including second-degree murder.

Reports first came in Monday afternoon that a baby was in serious condition after being stabbed at a home near Roeser Road and Riata Parkway just after 12:30 p.m.

Weeks said one more adult and two children were in the home at the time of the stabbing.
