LISTEN: Newly elected Congressman Andy Biggs on Obamacare, etc.

The first day on a new job usually is limited to introductions and getting settled; no heavy lifting. U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona’s experience was completely different.

His first day with the 115th Congress on Tuesday included a swearing-in then joining Republican colleagues’ first steps towards repealing “Obamacare.”

The freshman congressman told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s “Arizona’s Morning News” on Thursday, “Things move pretty quick out here. I’m learning a whole lot.”

As a politician who represents a state that was hit harder than most by rate hikes to President Barack Obama’s health plan, Biggs said, “We’re going to have to make sure that we have an alternative that is more patient-centric … make it more affordable. We’ve got some big stuff on our plate.”

The Republicans have not announced a replacement to the Affordable Care Act, which passed in 2010, but are working to present President-elect Donald Trump with a repeal bill by Feb. 20.

“Arizona is kind of at the epicenter of the negative things Obamacare has done,” the former state Senate President said.

He said any GOP proposal would have to contain costs for the insured, eliminate business insurance mandates and penalties against those who opt for other coverage.

Biggs, an Arizona native, served as a state representative for eight years before he was elected to the state Senate in 2010.

He beat business executive Christine Jones in the heavily-contested District 5 primary and easily won the general election.
