Man driving U-Haul truck leads Phoenix police on high-speed chase

PHOENIX — A man who led police in an hourslong, high-speed chase from Peoria to Paradise Valley in a U-Haul truck on Thursday afternoon has been arrested.

The unidentified 29-year-old suspect, who was wanted in a separate robbery, was arrested by Phoenix Police in Paradise Valley after leading officers on a Valley-wide chase that began earlier that afternoon.

Police had to shoot the man to bring him down after he attempted a carjacking near Tatum Boulevard and Lincoln Drive. Police said he was carrying a realistic-looking pellet gun.

 Capt. Rob McDade with Phoenix Fire said the suspect was taken to hospital in stable condition. Phoenix Police spokesman Sgt. Vince Lewis said the man was shot once by a veteran officer. Initial reports said the suspect had been shot and also fired on with a Taser.

Police said no officers fired a Taser at him.

Peoria Police Officer Brandon Sheffert said police received a call of an armed robbery at a convenience store near 75th and Peoria avenues around 4 p.m.

Police confirmed a handgun was recovered on the scene after the chase.

Peoria Police Officers attempted to stop the man near 67th Avenue and Bethany Home Road, but could not take down the suspect.
