PHOENIX — U.S. Sen. John McCain ripped into Barack Obama’s lack of action in Syria in an opinion piece, saying the president has done nothing to help the people of Aleppo.
In an opinion piece for the Washington Post, McCain argues that the United States was complicit in Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s bloody retaking of the city.
“President Obama speaks of the need to ‘bear witness’ to injustice,” McCain wrote. “He did little else for Aleppo.”
McCain wrote that the speeches given by Obama on the Syrian civil war did little to stop mass graves from filling up, halt a massive immigration crisis or contain the terror group known as ISIS.
The senator then went on to write that Americans need to realize they have a stake in what happens in Syria because it could lead to the further spread of ISIS or resurgence of al-Qaida, both of which have carried out attacks in the United States and around the world.
He called for an end to attempts to partner with Assad, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani because the trio is participating in “indiscriminate slaughter of Syrian civilians” that created a space in which ISIS could grow.
“To think that we can destroy the Islamic State by throwing in our lot with those who are strengthening it every day is a dangerous fantasy,” he wrote.
McCain said closed by writing the United States should not act as a world police force to further American interests, but it should step in where it can to halt “the worst injustices.” He said failure to bring the Syrian civil war to an end would ultimately allow terror groups to grow, which will eventually endanger American citizens.
