Skywatchers get double treat with supermoon, meteor shower on Tuesday night

The supermoon arrives again!

The moon reaches that special position in the sky this week, when it is not only full, but very close to Earth.

How do you find the supermoon? Look to the northeast sky after sunset and you will be treated to a most amazing sight.

This full moon will come within 224,000 miles of the Earth, making it one of the closest in many years.

Even at this close distance, you would still have to drive about 140 days just to get to the moon. That is, if you could drive there at 75 miles per hour, 24 hours per day.

It’s far away, but within reach by rocket-powered travel in about three days’ time.

The other major event this week will be the annual Geminid meteor shower. It peaks at the same time as the supermoon, meaning Tuesday night.

Look to the northeast sky after 10 p.m. till dawn. Even with bright moonlight, you may get to see a few bright fireballs.
