Holiday gift: Some Phoenix-area residents to see power bills drop slightly

PHOENIX — Some Phoenix-area residents will be receiving a holiday gift of slightly lower power bills, courtesy of Salt River Project.

The utility announced Tuesday that its board of directors approved a temporary 10-month rate decrease that will begin in January 2017.

The decrease will save the typical residential customer just under $1 per month during the winter and around $2.50 to $3.50 per month when the summer billing season begins in May.

Prices will return to the original winter prices that were approved in 2015 in November.

SRP said it was offering the slight reduction because it is ahead of its goal to have 20 percent of its retail power supplied through a sustainable resource. The utility provides about 14 percent of its retail power from sustainable methods.

The latest addition to SRP’s sustainable energy portfolio is an agreement to purchase the energy produced from Apple’s new 50-megawatt photovoltaic solar power plant located in Pinal County. SRP currently has 746 megawatts of renewable energy owned or under contract in its system.

SRP also said the cut was from lower-than-expected natural gas costs.
