PHOENIX — The Arizona highway patrol will dedicate a first-of-its-kind service center for the public in a Thursday ceremony.

The Department of Public Safety building at 22nd Avenue and Encanto Boulevard in Phoenix has been remodeled to accommodate several units that had been spread across several sites.

It’s the first time the department has ever opened a “one-stop shop” for services.

“By having all of our public service units together under one roof, we are going to be able to provide better, more timely customer service to the citizens of Arizona,” Capt. Jason Yeager said in a statement.

The remodel took two years.

The center will house concealed weapons permits, criminal history and public records, fingerprinting, security guard and private investigator licensing, sex-offender compliance and 30-day impounds.

Visitors must register and anyone with business dealings will have to take a number at the service counter.

There is only one access point to the 90,000-square-foot building for the general public, off Encanto Boulevard.

Troopers from several other units will also work in the building. There will be training, booking, administrative work and a future crime lab breathalyzer unit on site.

The ceremony was scheduled for 1 p.m., when Encanto Plaza becomes Sheinfeld Plaza.

We want to hear from you.
