Health expert: Alcohol does not cause cancer

It’s highly unlikely your beer or wine or any other drink of alcohol will cause cancer.

KTAR’s health expert Dr. Terry Simpson says alcohol has long been known as a cancer promoter.

“Alcohol by itself doesn’t cause cancer,” he said. “[However], if you smoke cigarettes and you drink alcohol, your risk of developing cancer is higher.”

A study in the July issue of the journal Addiction claims alcohol consumption can cause seven kinds of cancer, including throat and esophageal.

The study did not state what amount of alcohol had to be consumed to cause cancer.

Simpson says it’s OK to keep having a beer with friends or a glass of wine.

“Alcohol is a factor that increases your risk of cancer with other risk factors,” he said.
