Cleveland police dismiss report of gunshots near Republican National Convention

CLEVELAND — Police said a report making the rounds Tuesday of shots being fired near a transport vehicle by the Republican National Convention is untrue.

The report picked up a lot of steam about 10 a.m. Arizona time, when it was tweeted out by Reuters.

The tweet quickly made its rounds, prompting many media members on Radio Row to pick up the phone and start making calls. Within minutes, police had addressed the situation on social media.

Prior to the reported shooting, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams told assembled media that reports of gunshots are not uncommon.

“In a dense urban area, you get reports of things like that happening,” he said.

The shooting report could have stemmed from an incident that was mentioned briefly online overnight. A couple tweets said shots were heard near a police transport vehicle, but no location or other specifics were given.
