Phoenix police, fire hosting public safety camp for girls

PHOENIX — Phoenix girls who want to find out what it’s like to be a police officer or firefighter will get their chance this week at a special camp.

The city’s first-ever Public Safety Camp is going on through Thursday at the Franklin Police and Fire High School, located near 19th Avenue and McDowell Road. Participants will learn how to handle fire equipment, self-defense, and even how to put out a car fire.

“These kind of things exist elsewhere – the Girl Scouts do some things in Tucson,” Phoenix Fire spokeswoman Reda Bigler said. “Franklin High School said, ‘Hey let’s put this camp together for an all-girls camp.’”

Principal Lorenzo Cabrera said the response was great for its first time. “

On paper, we have 97 who registered,” he said. “I think, right now, our hard numbers are indicating we’re between 80 to 90 participants.”

The school was aiming for 100 girls to take part.

The camp will be held daily from 8-11 a.m. through Thursday.
