How Phoenix-area first responders deal with excessive heat

PHOENIX — First responders take care of everyone else when high heat hits Arizona but how do they take care of themselves?

The same way they recommend the rest of the public prepare for the extreme heat.

“Maintain proper rest and nutrition regimens, to observe appropriate work and rest cycles and, also, to hydrate before, during and after each shift,” Mesa Fire Department Deputy Chief Forrest Smith said. “We make sure that everybody’s at least drinking 64 ounces, or two quarts, of water a day.”

Smith said strenuous activities, such as work outs, are also cut.

Dehydration can set in within an hour in severe heat. The Valley is under a heat advisory until Wednesday night.

“Try to minimize the time you’re spending outside in the heat,” Smith said.
