700-pound boulder falls on Arizona hiker, man survives

PHOENIX — A hiker managed to survive being trapped underneath a 700-pound boulder in a Phoenix wash, authorities said.
Capt. Ardell Deliz of the Phoenix Fire Department said that the man, in his 40s, was hiking along the Salt River bottom near Central Avenue on Sunday night when he fell trying to climb up the side.
The rock became loose and rolled onto one of the man’s legs.
Authorities didn’t say how long the unidentified was trapped before another hiker said he heard cries for help.
Emergency teams treated the man until enough firefighters arrived to lift the rock.
He was taken to a hospital.
No details of his condition have been released.
