Hold your fire: Tonto National Forest to temporarily ban target shooting
A portion of the Tonto National Forest will temporarily ban target shooting on April 23 to protect volunteers during a clean up event throughout the area.
PHOENIX — A portion of the Tonto National Forest will temporarily ban target shooting on April 23 to protect volunteers during a clean up event throughout the area.
The Lower Sycamore area will be closed off from using a firearm, air rifle or gas gun from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, according to the United States Forest Service.
According to the department, all National Forest System lands and roads will be closed within the area to the northwest of State Route 87 and within a half-mile of the following roads, starting at the intersection of State Highway 87 and Forest Road 1847:
• Northeast along Forest Road 1847 to the intersection of Forest Road 403
• Northwest along Forest Road 403 to the intersection of the north bank of Sycamore Creek
The closure will be in place to protect visitors and volunteers during a clean up event, hosted by the Rock Stars Motorcycle Club, and Arizona 4×4 Club.
The only people exempt from the order are anyone with a permit from the Forest Service that authorizes the “prohibited act” or federal, state or local officers, firefighters or organized rescue members performing an official duty.
