Poll: Less than half of Arizonans think state headed in right direction

PHOENIX — Arizonans are dissatisfied with the way the state is being run, a poll said Wednesday.

The poll from the Behavior Research Center found 41 percent of Arizonans think the state is “seriously off track,” though it was unclear why people thought that.

The center said the results reflected some partisan thinking. More than 60 percent of Democrats think the state is headed in the wrong direction while 41 percent of Republicans agreed.

The poll said women and older residents were the most likely to feel Arizona is not heading where it should be.

But the opinions weren’t all bad. About 37 percent of respondents feel Arizona is moving in the right direction. The poll was based on a survey of 700 people, including 564 registered voters.

The poll also asked respondents how they felt about Gov. Doug Ducey’s first term in office. Arizonans were apparently split, as 23 percent feel he’s doing an “excellent” or “good” job, while 21 percent were outright negative toward him.

About 24 percent said they were unsure how they feel about Ducey.

As would be assumed in a politically-divided state such as Arizona, the Ducey results also revealed some partisanship.

More than 30 percent of Republicans gave Ducey a clear favorable rating, compared to 20 percent of independents and 17 percent of Democrats.

The largest gap was seen in his disapproval ratings: 10 percent of Republicans said they think he’s doing a poor job, while 24 percent of independents and 40 percent of Democrats thought the same way.
