‘Why are you doing that?’ Frustrated reporter helps man who drove into flooded area
A Houston reporter frustrated by motorists driving into a flooded area wound up helping one swim out of the floodwaters.
It’s Monday.
We’re sure you’ve probably let out a few sighs, maybe wondering why Ethel over in accounting just can’t seem to get her act together.
But look at it this way: At least Ethel’s misplaced decimal isn’t a life-threatening situation (or at least we hope so).
That wasn’t the case for KTRK reporter Steve Campion, who was reporting on heavy weather moving through the Houston area on Monday.
As Campion was reporting on live TV, not one, but two drivers attempted to cross a flooded freeway underpass. The water was several feet deep, but the drivers seemed determined to get to wherever they were going.
We think a frustrated Campion put it best when he said, “Why are you doing that” as the second car drove slowly into the water.
As Arizonans know — thanks, Stupid Motorist Law — crossing a flooded area is a poor idea. It only takes a few inches of water to get a car to float, let alone several feet.
Apparently, the second driver didn’t realize the water was there. As Campion looked on, he panicked and yelled to ask advice as the vehicle began to sink.
Campion yelled back and eventually persuaded the man to swim out of the floodwater and leave his car, which was bobbing like a cork.
Always the helpful reporter, a sighing Campion waded into the waist-deep water and helped pull the man out. Everyone was OK.
The cars weren’t. They were submerged.
