Phoenix-area burglary suspect still in hiding but police say they have DNA link to crime

Police in a Phoenix suburb were searching on Monday for a burglary suspect who has managed to escape custody twice in less than a year and had even been arrested while still wearing handcuffs.

PHOENIX — Police in a Phoenix suburb were searching on Monday for a burglary suspect who has managed to escape custody twice in less than a year and had even been arrested while wearing handcuffs from a previous arrest.

Preston T. Schireman also failed to show for a court appointment, making him a fugitive.

Paradise Valley law enforcement said physical evidence left behind at a burglary near 58th Street and Northern Avenue last May pointed to Schireman as a suspect.

Police said in a statement that the Scottsdale Police Crime Lab had tested the physical evidence.

Schireman has been arrested for burglarizing homes and cars and stealing a motorcycle in Phoenix. Police said he has given them aliases during his arrests and during one arrest, was driving a motorcycle that had been reported stolen in a burglary.

A Paradise Valley police spokesman said Schireman had been caught at a Phoenix burglary and was still wearing handcuffs that belonged to the wealthy suburb’s police department.

In August 2015, Schireman was stopped in Paradise Valley as a suspect in thefts from several cars. He got away.

Phoenix police said Schireman posted the $1,000 bail in that case then didn’t show up for his next Maricopa County Superior Court date.

Tips can be called in to Paradise Valley police at 480-948-7410.
