Here goes the boom: GoPro video shows beautifully terrifying bridge demolition

In less than a minute, this video of a bridge demolition in Oklahoma is as beautiful as it is terrifying. The U.S. Route 377 and Oklahoma State Highway 99 bridge over the Washita River had to be replaced due to storm damage.

Two words: Holy. Cow.

In less than a minute, this GoPro video of a bridge demolition is as beautiful as it is terrifying.

The video, posted on YouTube by the technology company as part of its annual GoPro awards, showed the demolition of the U.S. Route 377 and Oklahoma State Highway 99 bridge over the Washita River.

It was torn down using more than 600 pounds of explosives in a controlled demolition in October 2015 in order to construct a new bridge, according to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

The bridge was hauled away in five pieces after the demolition.

The bridge was built in 1943 and wasn’t scheduled for a rebuild until 2018, but a CBS affiliate in Oklahoma reported the bridge was “damaged beyond repair” due to historic spring flooding in 2015, forcing the rebuild to come sooner.

Luckily, precautions were taken beforehand to warn residents of the demolition so any injuries were avoided. We hope the good, ol’ residents of Oklahoma will enjoy their new bridge!
