Wife gets 18 years in Argentine governor’s murder

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) – The widow of a provincial Argentine governor has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for killing her husband in a drunken rage last New Year’s Day.

Susana Freydoz, 61, made no statements during her trial or Tuesday’s sentencing in the death of her husband, Rio Negro Gov. Carlos Soria, and will remain hospitalized for the immediate future.

Her lawyers argued that she should be absolved due to “mental alienation.”

Prosecutors wanted life in prison. But the judges found extenuating circumstances including drunkenness, drug use, suicide attempts and obsessive efforts to catch the ruling party governor with a lover.
