When will the Republicans learn? We’re about to have a 14th congressional hearing into the deaths of four Americans at our consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Do you remember Beirut? Do the Republicans?

In 1983, terrorists killed 63 people at our embassy there. Six months later, they killed 241 service members at the U.S. Marine compound in Beirut. Republican Ronald Reagan was president. The House was controlled by Democrats. There was one hearing on the attacks. Just one. The committee members gathered the facts, assigned blame and made recommendations to avoid such a disaster in the future.

Those of us who do remember long for the days when public service meant just that and it was possible to unite across party lines and get things done.
