PHOENIX — Cleanup crews were in for a long day in one north Phoenix neighborhood after a summer storm struck the area hard.

Winds as high as 40 mph uprooted trees and snapped many more in half Monday night near Cactus Road and Tatum Boulevard.

At the Park Ridge Apartments, a eucalyptus tree weighing thousands of pounds came crashing down onto an apartment unit, puncturing the roof.

“The rain was absolutely going sideways,” Ron Zur, who lives nearby, said Tuesday morning.

Storm, high winds wreak havoc in Phoenix neighborhood

PHOENIX — Cleanup crews were in for a long day in one north Phoenix neighborhood after a summer storm struck the area hard.

Winds as high as 40 mph uprooted trees and snapped many more in half Monday night near Cactus Road and Tatum Boulevard.

At the Park Ridge Apartments, a eucalyptus tree weighing thousands of pounds came crashing down onto an apartment unit, puncturing the roof.

“The rain was absolutely going sideways,” Ron Zur, who lives nearby, said Tuesday morning.

“The wind was howling. I don’t know what it’s like to be in a tornado but it was a very intense storm.”

Paradise Valley Mall also lost several trees in the parking lots.

The National Weather Service’s Phoenix bureau also tweeted that severe wind gusts Tuesday were a possibility with “any storm that forms.”
