Ryan’s step-by-step future plans start with trade

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congressman Paul Ryan has a new plan, and it’s not about entitlement reform. It’s a plan for his future, a path through policy to a familiar decision point of whether to run for president.

Not now, he says. These days, as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, he’s trying to get passed legislation that would give President Barack Obama “fast track” power to strike trade agreements. Second, Ryan wants to overturn Obama’s signature health care law. Taxes and welfare reform come next — all within the six years House rules allow him to remain chairman.

And then? He’s not ruling out a run for president, when his kids are older and he’s got more accomplishments under his chairmanship.
