Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon was sworn in today for his second and final term in office as mayor and used part of his inauguration speech at the Orpheum Theater to acknowledge that there are differences of opinion in the city over illegal immigration.
“But we cannot let our disagreements erode the values and the principals we continued to hold so dear. Phoenix, we will continue to speak to the dignity of humanity — of all humanity.”
The mayor says racial profiling won’t be tolerated in Phoenix. “So let us all remember that not everyone who speaks Spanish or looks Hispanic is in this country illegally, quite the opposite.”
“Stereotyping by anyone is wrong. Profiling by anyone is wrong and illegal and neither has a place in the City of Phoenix.”
Gordon again called on the federal government to secure the nation’s borders.
