PHOENIX — Summer is just around the corner, which means many teenagers are going to be looking for a job soon.
According to Ryan Naylor with the Scottsdale-based employment website Local Work, teens should start looking for a summer job as soon as possible.
“Arizona is a really hot market right now,” he said. “We’re seeing a lot of companies that are leaving other states. They’re coming here because of the business-friendly climate, and they’re hiring, and they’re hiring a lot.”
The job climate is competitive, Naylor said, but there are jobs for those who do their homework, adding many of the good jobs will be filled by May.
“Be active,” he said. “There’s no excuse to be sitting around, saying there’s no jobs. There are a lot of jobs. You’ve got to network, and you’ve got to be flexible.”
Networking is a key factor in the job hunt, Naylor said, both directly and on social media. Naylor also warns teenagers to be realistic when it comes to the positions they will fill.
“Your first job is not going to offer a 20-hour work week and six-figure salary,” he said. “Expect rejection and stay positive.”
Naylor said it is also important to build experience, suggesting teenagers who can’t get experience at first through a paid job get experience in their chosen field by volunteering.
