GLENDALE, Ariz. — Glendale Community College is turning 50.

It was a party-like atmosphere Wednesday at the college campus as faculty and students started to shovel dirt to get ready for part of the anniversary celebration.

They’re going to leave something for the future.

“We’re actually burying a time capsule that will be opened in 2040, when the college is 75 years old,” said GCC President Irene Kovala. “(We’re doing this to allow people in the future) to reflect on what was happening in 2014-15 when the college celebrated its 50th year.”

Kovala described several items that will be contained in the capsule.

“Things like an iPhone, things like something that was printed from a 3-D printer, lots of (school) programs,” said Kovala.

Several city, state and school newspapers will also be in the receptacle, so that people 25 years from now can read about what life was like in 2015.

Something from KTAR will also be in the capsule. Reporter Mark Remillard is pictured in a newspaper as he interviewed a Glendale official around the time of the 2015 Super Bowl. Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers is also in the same picture, as he was being interviewed by other reporters.

Kovala thinks the world will be quite different when the capsule is opened 25 years from now.

“Who knows how much the world will change in 25 more years,” said Kovala. “We want people to see what it was like (in 2015), (so that they can) get an appreciation of the many changes that they will have seen by that time.”

The West Valley college also wants to include one of the programs from this year’s May 15 commencement in the time capsule. It will be included once those programs are printed, which is expected to happen within the next few weeks, Kovala said.

We want to hear from you.
