Gilbert school board pushes ahead to trim $8M budget deficit

PHOENIX — The Gilbert Public Schools board, facing an $8 million to $10 million deficit, could implement a hiring freeze and cut back on professional development to make up some of the difference.
Gilbert Schools Superintendent Christina Kishimoto also said that furloughs weren’t on the table “this next year,” implying forced days off were possible in the future.
“… that is one way in which an extreme budget situation can be addressed by the district”,” she said of furloughs.
The board also voted to consider open enrollment
In other board action, the contract of suspended Gilbert High School football coach Tim Rutt was not renewed. The date was effective May 22, 2014.
Rutt was placed on administrative leave twice in the past year.
Last summer he was accused of misusing items from a booster club, the East Valley Tribune reported, and put on leave. Gilbert Police investigated and cleared Rutt.
Last month, the Arizona Republic reported that Rutt was back on leave for failure to report an alleged hazing incident.
