PHOENIX — A Maricopa County child died this week after coming down with the flu, health officials said Wednesday.
“It is always tragic to have to report a child dying, especially from flu,” Dr. Bob England, director of Maricopa County Department of Public Health, said in a release.
The child (who will not be identified because of privacy laws) was diagnosed with the H3N2 strain of influenza. The mutated strain has been associated with serious illness in both children and older adults and is vaccine-resistant.
One child died of the flu in Arizona in 2014.
