Artillery shells found at Arizona steel mill, area evacuated

PHOENIX — Authorities evacuated a rural area in Mesa on Wednesday after artillery shells and other possible munitions were found at a steel recycling plant.
Police sent a robot to give the shells a closer look.
Workers spotted the
items in a pile of scrap metal at CMC Steel Arizona.
The plant is on Germann Road past Gateway Airport.
Fire Capt. Forrest Smith said they didn’t know how many shells were at the site but that they had been delivered.
CMC Steel Arizona is part of Commercial Metals Co. based in Irving, Texas.
