PHOENIX — It’s a good thing most runners pound the pavement for their own gratification and not for reward.
More than 22,000 runners in this weekend’s P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in the Valley faced the possibility of not receiving medals for finishing.
Race organizers informed the entrants in a Facebook post and on the event’s website of a backlog in delivery out of California ports:
In recent months, a protracted contract dispute between dockworkers and their
employers has spilled from the negotiating table onto the docks — and containers
are taking longer to reach their destinations.
However, race officials said the medals were delivered early Saturday, two hours before a
scheduled 5K race in Tempe.
The annual weekend event features a half-marathon, 10K and and a relay on Sunday in addition to the 5K event Saturday.
The event will restrict freeway and surface street traffic in the Valley through early Sunday afternoon.
