Flagstaff police release body-cam video from officer’s shooting death

Jan 14, 2015, 1:20 PM | Updated: 1:27 pm

PHOENIX — Video from a Flagstaff police officer’s body camera showed the young man asking a suspect if he could check him for a weapon just moments before the officer was shot to death.

Flagstaff Police released the video of the Dec. 27 death of Officer Tyler Stewart, 24, who was talking to a suspect of domestic violence.

Police had said shortly after the shooting that Robert Smith, 28, had shot Stewart after the two had a low-key talk about the abuse allegations.

The video showed Stewart and Smith standing outside a Flagstaff home. Smith’s hands were in his pocket.

WARNING: The video does not show the shooting but could still be disturbing to some.

Police said Smith killed himself almost immediately afterward with
Stewart’s service weapon.

The video was released to the media under state public records requests.
