Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix has been selected by the National Football League to provide neurological support during next month’s Super Bowl in Glendale.
“Having a healthcare provider on the sideline is critically important, especially one with an expertise in concussion,” said Javier Cardenas, medical director of the Barrow Concussion and Brain Injury Center.
“They can evaluate the athlete and (have) a clear understanding of what’s going on, know the symptoms and signs of concussion are, and making sure the athlete doesn’t suffer greater injury.”
Cardenas and Barrow neurosurgeon Taro Kaibara will be at the game to provide neurological specialty support to the physicians of both teams. The appointment is part of a NFL guideline that places independent medical specialists on the sidelines at all games to better address concussion.
The physicians were selected for the NFL’s Unaffiliated Neurotrauma Consultant program based on Barrow’s renowned neurological treatment of brain and spinal cord injuries, including concussion.
