PHOENIX — The holidays are full of chances to sneak in that extra piece of pie, a cookie or a second helping of turkey.

Adding a few pounds is easy, but a Phoenix boxing gym is using both a weight-loss challenge and a gimmick to encourage people to punch away their holiday weight.

“Fitness is important and this is a great alternative,” said Elaine Deinas, owner of Title Boxing Club near Bell Road and Seventh Street in Phoenix. “It’s interactive, it’s fun and it’s a very engaging workout.”

Deinas is offering her clientele an extra incentive during the holidays. If they shed 10 pounds before year’s end, she will reward them with two free months of membership. To further motivate Punch the Pounds Away challenge participants, she’s adorning punching bags with photos of holiday treats.

Both boxing and kickboxing are gaining in popularity, especially among women. Deinas said her clientele is about 80 percent female.
